University students from Asunción and the Central Department can now apply for the 2025 Hayes Scholarships. This program offers the opportunity to attend free in-person English classes, with the prospect of pursuing postgraduate studies in the United States in the future.
The Central Department comprises 19 districts of the metropolitan area around Asunción. The program aims to enhance access to English language learning for students in this area with high academic potential, but limited financial resources. The application period is open until Tuesday, 20 May, at 23:59.
The educational initiative is promoted by the United States Embassy, the Paraguayan-American Chamber of Commerce, the AMCHAM Foundation, and the Paraguayan-American Cultural Centre (CCPA).
“These scholarships offer a vital opportunity for dedicated young people eager to improve their English as a tool for academic and professional growth,” the organisation states.
It is not the first time the United States Embassy has offered opportunities to students. Two months ago, Hayes Scholarships launched, aiming to attract students from the northern region of Paraguay.
Applying for free English language classes
To be eligible, applicants must possess a foundational knowledge of English and undertake a complimentary CCPA-placement test to ensure their proficiency aligns with the scholarship criteria. Only students who pass this stage will proceed to the next phase of selection.
Key requirements include being Paraguayan or holding permanent residency, currently being enrolled in a university degree or technical course and having an overall grade average of 3.5 or higher.
Additional key requirements are providing documentation to demonstrate limited financial resources, not currently studying English at any institute and committing to completing the programme and attending in-person classes on Saturdays.
