A Breath Beside the Waterfall
My birthday was not just another checkpoint I pass every year; this time, it was a moment to catch my breath, to step away from life’s relentless pace. I felt an inner pull toward something deeper… something truer than the crowded streets and endless appointments. So, my partner in life and I decided to leave Asunción behind, like shaking off a layer of dust from our shoulders, and head toward a wider, more open space.
The journey to Saltos del Monday was quiet, carrying countless stories within it. The farther we moved from the capital, the more nature slowly revealed itself, as if drawn from behind a heavy curtain. Trees multiplied, the air grew lighter, the sky stretched wider, and silence transformed into a soft music, heard only by those who truly listen.
I sat by the window, watching the world pass. I sought a sense of balance I had long lost. Perhaps I was seeking a genuine moment—a moment that needed no camera, no words—a moment I could simply say: “Yes, I am here… I am alive.”
As we reached the reserve, something stirred within me… the distant roar of the waterfall reached us like a heartbeat. I hadn’t seen it yet, but its sound alone awakened something I had forgotten. Step by step, the earth seemed to pull me forward toward a scene I knew would change something inside me.
And then the waterfalls appeared. For a brief moment, the world seemed to pause. Time granted me a private minute to witness a scene unlike any other. Water poured fiercely, striking the rocks with tireless force. Yet it also rose as a gentle mist, like the very breath of the earth.
It was a paradox of strength and serenity, chaos and calm. Sounds roared, yet a deep inner silence enveloped me. Hundreds of visitors surrounded me, but it felt as if the place spoke only to me. Nature seemed to address each soul differently, in words unheard but understood.
I stood before the waterfall, listening—not just with my ears, but with my heart. Perhaps it was telling me that, no matter how we chase life, something inside always seeks a new beginning. Or perhaps it whispered simply: “Be still… everything passes, and water knows best how to flow.”
Droplets scattered, mist kissed my face, the humid air clung to my skin, and the scent of wet earth filled my senses. Everything was alive. Suddenly, the world felt vast, and I—with all my fears, desires, and fatigue—was just a tiny point in this infinite universe. Yet even a tiny point has the right to breathe, to dream, to begin again.
Amid the crowd, a gentle peace lingered. Young people laughed, snapping pictures. Families shared meals. Foreign visitors stood in awe, searching for words. Each person lived their own moment, discovering something unique in the same water.
My gaze fell on my little daughter, Sana. She stood by the railing, eyes wide, drinking in every detail. Fearless in her wonder, she laughed, took my hand, and whispered: “Mama… the waterfall is huge!”
For a moment, I realized this place did not just amaze me… it amazed a child learning her first lesson of beauty, power, and awe. I saw myself in her gaze, years ago. Nature seemed to murmur: “Every generation deserves its own wonder.”
That single moment made the journey worth everything. I felt a deep gratitude—for the place, the time, the chance that led us here. Often, we don’t need faraway travels or grand plans… just a space that realigns our hearts.
As we walked away, I carried something new. Perhaps calm… perhaps strength… or simply a reminder that nature is the mirror where we see ourselves most clearly. Each step whispered: “Hold this moment… you will need it one day.”
Before leaving, I turned back for one last glance. I did not just see falling water. I saw life itself: sometimes we fall hard, but we rise. Sometimes we scatter like droplets, but we regroup. And sometimes, the roar of water teaches us to find silence within ourselves.
✨ A message to anyone reading this story:
If you ever feel lost, exhausted, or searching for meaning… give yourself a chance to connect with a real place. A place like Saltos del Monday is not just a tourist destination—it is a space where your spirit can breathe, even for an hour.
Don’t always chase grand things… Nature quietly reminds us:
“Sometimes, standing before a waterfall is enough to remember yourself.”
