President Lai Ching-te of the Republic of China (Taiwan) extended a warm welcome to Paraguay’s new ambassador, Darío Filártiga, upon the presentation of his credentials. When a new ambassador presents credentials, they formally submit a letter of credence, affirming their diplomatic role and authority to represent their country. The Taiwanese President welcoming Filártiga marked the official commencement of Filártiga’s diplomatic mission.
President Lai expressed his strong desire to elevate the already existing relationship between Taiwan and Paraguay to even greater heights. He highlighted the deep-rooted connection between Taiwan and Paraguay, emphasising their shared commitment to democratic values. And also noted the multifaceted nature of the partnership, which encompasses education, cultural exchange, and trade.
Focus on investment
Before the Taiwanese President welcomed Filártiga, the Ambassador took his oath of office in Asunción in June 2025. The Ambassador previously stated that his primary objective in Taiwan would be to attract Taiwanese investment to Paraguay. “I will focus on convincing Taiwanese entrepreneurs to invest and create jobs in Paraguay,” he stated.
President Santiago Peña of Paraguay, during a significant meeting following President Lai’s inauguration, also advocated for a new paradigm in the relationship between the two countries. President Peña proposed a greater emphasis on technological transfer and other collaborative initiatives. He stated on that occasion: “Let us be true partners, friends. I wish us to be ambitious in the goals we want to achieve.”
Under the current administration, trade between Taiwan and Paraguay has seen a considerable increase. This growth is particularly evident in the beef sector, a cornerstone of Paraguayan exports. Taiwan currently stands as the second-largest market for Paraguayan beef and the destination for over 80% of the country’s pork exports.
Also a new Paraguayan Ambassador to the U.S.

Following the ceremony in Washington D.C., Ambassador Leite delivered a message from the Paraguayan Government. He emphasised a bilateral agenda focused on the prosperity of citizens and entrepreneurs in both Paraguay and the United States.
