Paraguayan academics now have the opportunity to undertake advanced research in East Asia through the prestigious Taiwan Fellowship 2025. The programme, offered by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of China (Taiwan), will support research projects at Taiwanese universities and research institutions throughout 2026.
Designed to deepen academic cooperation and cultural understanding between Paraguay and Taiwan, the Taiwan Fellowship supports research in fields such as Taiwan studies, cross-strait relations, Sinology, Asia-Pacific regional security, Chinese studies, and gender studies. Candidates must apply before June 30 2025.
Fully funded support for academic research
The programme offers financial coverage that allows scholars to focus entirely on their work. Selected candidates will receive a monthly stipend of approximately USD 2,000 for senior-level researchers and USD 1,660 for postdoctoral researchers, doctoral candidates, and junior academics. The Taiwan Fellowship also covers return airfare in economy class and provides comprehensive health and accident insurance.
Fellows can choose a research duration ranging from three months to one full year, depending on the scope of their project and the hosting institution’s requirements.
Who is eligible for Taiwan Fellowship 2025?
Applicants must be Paraguayan nationals with a strong command of English and hold at least a master’s degree. The programme is open to university professors, researchers, doctoral candidates, and public-sector professionals such as government or congressional officials involved in academic research or policy development. The Taiwan Fellowship seeks individuals capable of producing impactful research with regional and international relevance.

Key documents include a minimum three-page research proposal, a CV with a list of publications, proof of English proficiency, a copy of the applicant’s passport, a recommendation or consent letter from their home institution, and confirmation from a Taiwanese host institution.
Strengthening bilateral ties
Taiwan and Paraguay have maintained diplomatic relations since 1957, with Paraguay remaining Taiwan’s only formal ally in South America. Recently, the Taiwanese ambassador, Han, celebrated five years of friendship in Paraguay, marking a significant milestone in bilateral cooperation. Ambassador Han has played a key role in strengthening ties, particularly through academic initiatives such as the Taiwan Fellowship.
This programme forms part of a broader strategy of academic diplomacy, aimed at fostering mutual understanding through research exchange. Previous participants from other countries have frequently gone on to establish lasting collaborations with Taiwanese universities, an outcome Paraguay now aspires to achieve.
For Paraguayan researchers, this fellowship not only offers access to cutting-edge facilities in East Asia, but also a chance to become part of a global network of scholars focused on issues of regional and international significance, thanks to the opportunities made possible by the Taiwan Fellowship.
