Paraguay has been officially selected to host the 71st meeting of the UNWTO Regional Commission for the Americas (CAM) in 2026. The country also secured the first vice-presidency of the CAM. This decision, confirmed during the commission’s 70th meeting in Peru, marks a significant milestone, bolstering Paraguay’s standing in international tourism.
The CAM is one of UNWTO’s most crucial platforms. It brings together ministers, high-ranking tourism officials from across the Americas, international bodies, and private sector representatives. Hosting the meeting in Paraguay offers a valuable opportunity to foster regional partnerships, share insights, and promote joint initiatives to strengthen tourism within the region.
Shortly after the host country announcement, Gustavo Santos, UNWTO Regional Director for the Americas, also revealed Paraguay’s selection as the site of a new UNWTO regional office. This office will also house the Technical Secretariat for the Jesuit Missions of South America.
Development of the Jesuit Missions of South America route
A key priority for the new office will be the development of the Jesuit Missions of South America route. This multi-destination tourism project links Paraguay with Argentina, Brazil, Bolivia, Uruguay, and Chile. Its aim is to highlight the shared Jesuit-Guarani heritage through distinctive cultural, historical, and spiritual experiences.
This initiative will establish Paraguay as a regional collaboration hub, promote community-focused tourism development, and diversify tourism offerings. And to facilitate the joint promotion of destinations with a common cultural identity.
Importance of the UNWTO Regional Commission
Paraguay’s Tourism Minister, Angie Duarte, who attended the meeting in Peru, stated that this achievement reinforces Paraguay’s position as a regional leader in developing sustainable and inclusive tourism that reflects the nation’s unique identity. It further solidifies Paraguay’s image as a destination well-equipped to host major global events.
Senatur is actively preparing for this landmark event. The meeting is anticipated to usher in a new era for Paraguayan tourism, enhancing its international visibility, boosting the local sector, and cementing the country’s dedication to a tourism model grounded in sustainability, innovation, and inclusivity.
