Berlin Marks 100 Years Of Guarania With “Sounds Of The Soul Concert”

The Ibero-American Institute in Berlin hosted an emotional and historical evening dedicated to Guarania – Paraguay’s most emblematic musical genre. The event, titled “Sonidos del Alma” (Sounds of the Soul), celebrated 100 years since José Asunción Flores created the genre.

Organised by the Paraguayan Embassy in Germany, the concert attracted a diverse audience of over 200 guests, including diplomats, members of the German government, Paraguayan expatriates, representatives of the diplomatic corps from four continents, students, artists, and music lovers from around the world. The celebration was perceived as both reflective, and uplifting.

Dignitaries were present at the event celebrating the 100 years of the Guarania.

The evening opened with remarks from Dr. Clara Ruvituso of the Ibero-American Institute, followed by a welcome from Paraguay’s Ambassador to Germany, Fernando Acosta Díaz. Both speakers emphasised the deep cultural significance of Guarania, not only as a musical expression but also as a symbol of national identity and unity.

Ambassador Acosta also reflected on the Chaco Peace Treaty, highlighting Paraguay’s strong commitment to peace and cultural exchange.

A night of music, Guarania, and joy

The concert paying hommage to the Guarania included a trio of acclaimed artists.

The performance featured a trio of acclaimed Paraguayan musicians: conductor Diego Sánchez Haase, tenor José Mongelós, and clarinettist Enrique Ríos Careaga. Presented in three stages, the programme followed the journey of Paraguayan music – starting with European classical influences, passing through the melodic heart of Guarania, and ending with the powerful rhythms that reflect the nation’s spirit.

The audience responded with warmth and admiration, reflecting the emotional power of each performance.

Paraguay’s legacy abroad

Recognised by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, Guarania continues to inspire across borders. Poetic melodies and lyrical beauty have made the genre a proud expression of Paraguayan identity, speaking to hearts everywhere. Paraguay also declared 2025 national year of the Guarania.

The Embassy of Paraguay expressed sincere gratitude to the Ibero-American Institute for welcoming this special celebration and opening one of Berlin’s most respected music venues. Their collaboration underscored the value of cultural diplomacy and the way music unites people from different parts of the world.

As “Sounds of the Soul” filled the halls of Berlin, it reminded everyone of Guarania’s lasting message – a voice from Paraguay that still touches hearts worldwide.
