The President of Paraguay, Santiago Peña, reaffirmed this Friday his government’s determination to position Paraguay as a leading player on the international stage and to continue showcasing the country’s qualities to attract investments, acting as a protagonist.
“We decided to go where we’ve never been to achieve what has never been achieved before: positioning Paraguay as what it truly is the best country in the world,” the President stated when asked about his recent trip to the United States.
He shared that he had meetings with approximately 50 U.S. Congress members and much of the new government’s cabinet under Donald Trump.
He highlighted one meeting with Secretary of State Marco Rubio, noting that Rubio’s relationship with Paraguay is one of friendship and alliance built on shared principles.
“This man, who probably holds the most important role in the American government after the President, was sworn in that afternoon and later told me he wanted to meet with me,” Peña recounted.
“This reflects a strategy to position Paraguay, to showcase Paraguay, its strengths, history, its present, and, most importantly, its promising future,” the President emphasized.
Peña described his time in the U.S. as a “historic visit” and hinted at significant developments in the coming months.
“I believe we will witness the greatest transformation in the relationship between Latin America and the United States, which will have an impact that transcends our continent. It will carry international and global implications, and I want to be part of that change. I want Paraguay to be a protagonist, not just an observer,” he said.
“We know our path. We will not stop”
The president underscored that his government has a clear goal of transforming Paraguay. “To transform Paraguay, we must be willing to do things differently,” he remarked.
“Those who truly know their path don’t stop, and we will not stop. I decided to go out and tell the world about the great country we Paraguayans have. Along the way, skeptics will try to discourage and criticize us, but I say, ‘You keep doing your work, and we’ll keep doing ours,” Peña stated.
He defended the increased investment in international missions. “Last year, we executed a very ambitious international agenda… There’s no secret here; I have an active international agenda, and I will continue with it,” he added.
“My job is to promote Paraguay. That is an investment, not a cost. Part of that investment will yield results during this administration. Still, the majority will be the legacy this administration leaves behind,” he concluded.
