Engaging Citizens in the Ypacaraí Lake Basin Sanitation Program

The Ministry of Public Works and Communications, through the Directorate of Drinking Water and Sanitation, calls for a series of citizen consultation days on the Ypacaraí Lake Basin Sanitation Program, financed by an IDB-Climate loan of USD 154 million.

The authorities will carry out the so-called “ Significant Consultation ” to the inhabitants of the main cities of the water basin, in order to inform the population about the ambitious project and incorporate their contributions in the design and implementation.

The aforementioned Program, financed by the Inter-American Development Bank with a horizon of 30 years, seeks to improve environmental and health conditions throughout the lake basin, promoting resilient development to climate change and low carbon emissions. In addition, it aims to facilitate access to green markets for financing the water and sanitation sector.

The planned interventions are based on the 2019 Comprehensive Sanitation Plan and the recent Ypacaraí Lake Circular Economy Action Plan, with a view to progressively recovering the quality of the waters of this emblematic natural heritage of all Paraguayans and ensuring decent sanitary conditions for the inhabitants of the area.

Meetings are scheduled for 2pm on Monday 5 August at the Itauguá Sanitation Board, and on Tuesday 6 August at the same time, at the Capiatá Sanitation Board.

The meetings will continue at 5pm on Wednesday 7 August at the Basic School No. 86 Domingo Martínez de Irala, in Areguá, and on Thursday 8 August at 9am, in the Assembly Hall of the Ministry of Public Works, 3rd floor, in Asunción.

The MOPC, through the Directorate of Drinking Water and Sanitation, as the executing agency, urges citizens and residents of Paraguay to this call and to actively participate in these spaces for dialogue for the collective construction of sustainable development in the Ypacaraí basin.
