MUSA: Inside Asunción’s Most Unusual Museum

The Museum of Chairs of Asunción (MUSA) is Paraguay’s first museum dedicated entirely to the design, history and function of chairs, elevating an everyday object into an object of cultural significance. The museum’s free collection invites visitors to reconsider familiar objects as creative expressions and cultural artefacts.

MUSA – Museo de Sillas de Asunción stands on Avenida General José Gervasio Artigas 4289, near Asunción’s Botanical Garden. The museum offers free admission and free guided tours with advance booking

The museum first opened its doors on 6 March 2013, when Argentine architect Jorge Jury founded it with an initial collection of around 300 chairs drawn from his own passions and interests. The collection now includes over 700 pieces spanning diverse eras, design movements, and cultural influences.

MUSA’s four floors display chairs in diverse materials and styles, from everyday functional seats to modernist and artisanal designs. The museum includes examples crafted by the Ava Guaraní indigenous community, whose wooden carvings depict local animals and symbols.

Exhibitions and Cultural Activities

The museum displays historic and artistic chairs while hosting temporary exhibitions, workshops, cultural events, and collaborations with local designers. These activities often emphasise how design reflects cultural identity, sustainability and material innovation.

For example, in 2023 MUSA presented the Diseña Paraguay exhibition, bringing together dozens of Paraguayan designers to showcase contemporary industrial design, further establishing the institution as a hub for creative expression and cultural dialogue.

Collection Highlights

  • Chairs from several historical periods and international design movements.
  • Works crafted by local artisans and communities.
  • Displays exploring chair design from functional, artistic, and cultural perspectives.
