Bayern Stuben: Great German Eatery In San Cristóbal Of Asunción

Each week, Tommy-Maurice is going to a different restaurant in Asunción. This week, he has been to Bayern Stuben, a great German restaurant in Barrio San Cristóbal.

In Asunción, you can find cuisine from all the continents. While you have plenty of options for South American restaurants, you also have a plethora of establishments serving European food. For those who have left the old continent to move to our part of the world, acclimation can be difficult; it is normal. That is why a place like Bayern Stuben exists! A restaurant serving food like in Bavaria! Bayern Stuben refers to traditional Bavarian-style restaurants or dining areas that embody Bavarian hospitality’s warm and rustic ambiance. The term combines Bayern, meaning Bavaria, a region in southern Germany known for its rich culture and hearty cuisine, with Stuben, the plural of Stube, which means cozy rooms or lounges. These establishments often feature classic Bavarian decor, wooden furnishings, and a welcoming atmosphere, serving traditional dishes such as schnitzel, sausages, pretzels, and beer. I was there with a group of friends, all from Europe and most from Germany, and I really liked the restaurant!

Bayern Stuben of Barrio San Cristóbal does offer traditional dishes from Germany such as currywurst, eisbein mit petersilienkartoffeln und sauerkraut, all types of schnitzel, hirtenspiess, rinderfilet, German goulash, and many other options. I took the zigeunerschnitzel. It is now called paprikaschnitzel in some restaurants and is a popular dish in Germany. It consists of a breaded and fried pork or veal cutlet, traditionally served with a pikanter soße — a flavourful, slightly spicy tomato-based sauce made with bell peppers, onions, and paprika, which gives it a rich and distinctive taste.

This hearty dish is often paired with curryreis, white rice seasoned with curry powder, adding a warm yellow hue and a mildly spiced flavour. The combination of crispy schnitzel, tangy and savoury sauce, and aromatic curry rice makes this meal a beloved classic in German cuisine. I really enjoyed the deliciously spicy flavour of the dish and how perfectly it was cooked. I would recommend and would definitely eat this dish again!

Another person in our group took the Eisbein mit Petersilienkartoffeln und Sauerkraut. It is a traditional German dish featuring a hearty combination of flavours and textures. Eisbein, or pork knuckle, is typically cured, slow-cooked, or boiled until tender, sometimes roasted for a crispy skin in certain regions. It is served alongside Petersilienkartoffeln, which are boiled potatoes tossed in butter and fresh parsley, adding a mild and herby flavour.

The meal is completed with Sauerkraut, a tangy and slightly sour fermented cabbage that provides a perfect contrast to the rich, savoury meat. Often enjoyed with mustard and a glass of beer, this dish is a staple of German cuisine, known for its comforting and satisfying taste. The dish also looked lovely, and I would like to try it as well! If you are missing Germany, you can eat one of those options, and if you have never eaten such food, you have a chance to try it here in Paraguay at Bayern Stuben!

The Bayern Stuben is charming, with the design and architecture containing lots of wood that reminds us of Germany and Austria. It also has a lot of pictures or paintings of people from Germany, including former leaders before the creation of the country when kingdoms were still prevailing in the old continent. The walls also hold football club shields and many other items, making it more European than South American. The Bayern Stuben is very clean and well-maintained and has a zone in the middle used as a biergarten, where it also has modules for children. It makes it very family-friendly. WIFI is available; you need to ask one of the friendly employees for the password. The restaurant also has close to 100 seats available, which means there is enough space for everyone!

The price of the zigeunerschnitzel at Bayern Stuben was 95K Guaraníes, which is around 12 American Dollars or 11.50 Euros. It is indeed on the higher end for a meal, especially compared to local dishes, but it is reasonable for an imported or specialty dish like this. I was eating my food with a bottle of water, priced at 8K Guaraníes, which is around one American Dollar or Euro. I paid for the bread basket of everyone, which was priced at 15K Guaraníes, which is slightly less than two American Dollars or Euro. The restaurant accepts cards and cash.

This great establishment is located in Barrio San Cristóbal on Avenida Mariscal Antonio José de Sucre, a street crossing the area from west to east. This neighbourhood is a trending one in Asunción, as restaurants and shops are opening in masses in the area. The restaurant is in the middle of a zone containing three neighbourhoods and is surrounded by Avenida Argentina, Avenida Mariscal López, Avenida Elisa Lynch, Avenida Santa Teresa, and Avenida Aviadores del Chaco. Parking is available just beside the establishments for the clients of Bayern Stuben. On the bigger streets, you can get out of the bus and walk the rest, as there is none passing in front. You can also easily take an Uber or a Bolt from or to Bayern Stuben.
