Paraguayan guitarist Berta Rojas, ambassador for Paraguayan music, concluded a highly successful tour of Japan. Rojas’ performance at Phoenix Hall – built in 1053 and standing today as a UNESCO World Heritage Site – was part of a wider tour encompassing several prestigious venues across Japan. Phoenix Hall, part of Byōdō-in Temple in Uji, Japan, is a stunning 11th-century structure renowned for its symmetrical design and reflection in the surrounding pond, symbolising a paradise palace.
Rojas, one of the world’s most acclaimed classical guitarists, also made a special appearance at the Paraguay stand at Expo Osaka 2025 at the invitation of Ambassador Mario Toyotoshi. Rojas is internationally recognised for her virtuosity, representing excellence and passion in the arts.
Showcasing Paraguayan culture
Rojas’s visit to the Paraguayan pavilion at the Expo served as a powerful symbol of the connection between Paraguay’s musical heritage and the cross-cultural dialogue fostered by the global event. During her time there, she interacted with numerous collaborators and visitors, receiving warm admiration and respect. Last month, Paraguayan tereré and Ñandutí also charmed visitors at Expo 2025 in Osaka.
Berta Rojas is considered one of the world’s leading classical guitarists. A Latin Grammy winner and Associate Professor at Berklee College of Music, she is known for her lyrical style, technical mastery, and dedication to promoting Latin American music. She has performed at prestigious venues such as Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Centre, and London’s Southbank Centre. Rojas’ 2022 album Legado won Best Classical Album at the Latin Grammys.
Earlier this year, Rojas released a striking new rendition of The Last of Us, in collaboration with Gustavo Santaolalla, the Argentine composer behind the original theme.
