For the third consecutive year, Paraguay participates in the Paris Gastronomy Festival 2025 (Village International de la Gastronomie 2025), an international food fair held near the Eiffel Tower from 11 to 14 September in Paris. More than 60 countries gather to celebrate cultural diversity in the French capital, using cuisine as a unifying force.
The Paraguayan delegation, comprising Antonella Elli and Julio Lüthold of Passion Guaraní, a Paraguayan restaurant located in Paris, along with a team of Paraguayan professionals, captivated visitors with traditional dishes. These include asadito (grilled meat) with chimichurri sauce, empanadas, chipa guasú (a cornbread), sopa paraguaya (a cornbread casserole), and fried cassava. All carefully adapted to European tastes.
This year’s offerings also feature traditional homemade chicken soup, a specialty of chef Catalino Garay, winner of awards for his exquisite chicken vorí vorí.
Proud Paraguayans in Paris
Antonella Elli expressed her pride and the challenge of showcasing Paraguayan cuisine in a highly competitive international context: “We are in a country where gastronomy is world-class. We have adapted our dishes without losing the Paraguayan essence, and the response has been very positive, with a great reception for the barbecue and traditional side dishes. We also have culinary surprises this weekend thanks to Chef Catalino Garay.”
Catalino Garay is a distinguished Paraguayan chef, and a fervent advocate for Paraguayan cuisine, showcasing traditional dishes with indigenous Guaraní influences. Working as a professional chef he is celebrated as a leading figure in promoting Paraguayan gastronomy across Europe.
“It is an honour to be present as an Ambassador of Paraguayan Gastronomy in Europe, sharing the flavours and traditions of my homeland with the world,” Garay shared. “Paraguay has a tradition that inspires, and flavours that conquer.”
Paris Gastronomy Festival 2025: Beyond gastronomy
Paraguay’s presentation extended beyond gastronomy. A cultural programme included performances by Andrea González and Lito Benítez Petersen. Their Paraguayan music filled the Friday and Saturday nights, offering a complete sensory experience. The event provided a platform to promote Paraguayan culture beyond food.
Participation in this high-profile international event offers Paraguay a strategic opportunity. It aims to strengthen the country’s brand, promote Paraguayan cuisine on the world stage, and foster cultural and commercial exchanges. The event highlights the growing interest in international culinary events, offering nations a chance to showcase their heritage.
