Have you ever wondered about the excitement and spirit of national pride that is likely palpable in Asunción in May? These feelings appear this time of the year because of Paraguay’s Independence, which occurred in the final hours of the 14th of May and then the 15th of May of 1811.
These are very important dates for Paraguayans since it was a pivotal moment in the country’s history, a moment that marked Paraguay’s liberation from Spanish colonial rule. Its events showcase the true spirit of Paraguayans: one of resilience, courage, and hope for a brighter future, but also one of non-violence and peace.
Several days of celebrating independence
Such an event in history deserves a fitting celebration, and that is why Asunción will be alive with the Fiestas Patrias (Patriotic Holidays)! These will take place over several days in Asunción.
The festivities begin at The House of Independence, the very cradle of Paraguay’s liberty, and it stands as a focal point for numerous significant events throughout the Fiestas Patrias. The commemoration will commence with the illuminating inauguration of its new lighting system at 7:30 pm on Saturday, May 10th.
The historic building then extended its welcome with opening hours from 07:30 am to 12:00 am on the crucial Wednesday, May 14th, and again from 9:30 am to 3 pm on Thursday, May 15. Notably, the “Aquel 1811” historical tour will begin at its doors at 8:30 am on Wednesday, May 14, guiding participants through the very locations where independence was forged, until 1 pm.
Even beyond the main celebration days, the House of Independence continues to serve as a beacon of history with the Descubrí la Historia que hizo libre a Paraguay (Discover the history that made Paraguay free) event on Monday, May 19. This event further emphasises its significance in the narrative of Paraguayan independence, though the specific time for this event is yet to be announced.
On May 15, “Mother’s Day” is also celebrated nationwide. It is a day to honour both mother and heritage.
