Why It’s Good to Visit?

If you’re planning a trip to South America, make sure to include Asunción, Paraguay, on your itinerary. It is worth a visit! And there are plenty of things to do in Asunción.

As one of the oldest settlements in South America, Asunción is dotted with colonial ruins, dozens of colourful museums, and vibrant artwork. The city is rich with history, culture and natural beauty.

During my visit, I discovered plenty of activities that made my trip unforgettable. The blend of old-world charm and contemporary culture provides a unique travel experience.

Here are twelve amazing things to do in Asunción, based on my firsthand experience and insights from fellow travellers.

1. Learn History at the National Pantheon of Heroes

The National Pantheon is a must-do while travelling around Asunción.

The Pantheon is a powerful symbol of Paraguay’s history and resilience. It houses the remains of many national heroes, including the country’s first president, Don Carlos Antonio López, and the victor of the Chaco War, Marshal José Félix Estigarribia.

Visiting the National Pantheon helped me understand Paraguay’s rich historical tapestry and really appreciate its architectural beauty. Our guide, Marco, went into detail about the stunning architecture, the remains buried there and deep insights into the country’s history. Our knowledgeable guide provided context and stories that we might have missed on our own, making the visit much more enriching.

2. Shop at the famous Asunción City Market (Mercado Cuatro)

Make sure to check out the markets at Asunción and consider purchasing tereré while you are there. It’s a must-try!

Asunción’s largest open-air market has souvenirs, fresh fruits, traditional terere (the national drink of Paraguay) and traditional Paraguayan dishes.

Consider purchasing Tereré while at the markets (a highly caffeinated cold-brewed herbal drink) from the tea sellers grinding yerba mate with a giant mortar pestle. You simply must try this drink to know what is all the fuss about.

We also stopped to sample some of the local delicacies on offer including tasty snacks like pira caldo (fish stew) and asado with chunks of yucca.

Experience the hustle and bustle of a traditional Paraguayan market. You’ll find everything from fresh produce to handicrafts and local delicacies.

Mercado Cuatro is a vibrant and lively market offering a true taste of local culture and cuisine.

3. Grab a South American Meal at Bolsi

Bolsi is the place to try a traditional South American meal while in Asunción.

This buzzing restaurant has a central location with outstanding service and charming ambience which are perfectly complemented by the extensive menu. We sampled several traditional dishes, including the renowned coxinha and Paraguayan specialties like chipa guasu.

Each dish offered a unique flavour profile that showcased the culinary diversity of the region. Highly recommend the crispy yet soft coxinha (shredded chicken that’s breaded and then fried into a cone). It was delicious!

Bolsi is a fantastic spot to try traditional South American dishes in a comfortable and lively setting.

4. Marvel at the Historic Palacio de López

The Palacio de López is one of the most beautiful historic buildings in Asunción.

This historic palace is the workplace for the President and the seat of the government of the Republic of Paraguay. The building design is striking, and the Asunción sign in front adds to the charm. We spent time taking photos and enjoying the view, particularly at night when the palace is beautifully lit.

The presidential palace is an iconic building with stunning architecture. Although you can’t enter, the exterior is worth a visit, especially at night when it’s illuminated.

The Palacio de López is a visual treat and a great place to appreciate Paraguayan architecture.

5. Discover the Museo del Barro

The Museo del Barro is a cultural haven that should not be missed when visiting Asunción.

The museum provides a deep understanding of Paraguay’s artistic and cultural heritage. We spent hours exploring the various exhibits, from indigenous pottery to contemporary art. It’s a small but meaningful space with lots to learn and view.

Museo del Barro is a must-visit for art and culture enthusiasts. The beautiful museum is well organised and maintained by dedicated staff. Although there wasn’t much information, I still had a great time and enjoyed looking at all the beautiful unique art pieces.

6. Stroll Through the Costanera de Asunción

Enjoy a leisurely sunset walk on the scenic waterfront.

We took a long walk along the promenade, enjoying the fresh air and beautiful views along the Paraguay River. The scenery was beautiful, and it was very relaxing. We stopped and took photos at a cool I love Asuncion sign.

It was an enjoyable place to walk in the late afternoon. The Costanera de Asunción offers a relaxing and picturesque setting perfect for a leisurely walk, bike ride, or enjoying the sunset.

Strolling along the Costanera de Asunción is a delightful way to unwind and enjoy the natural beauty of the riverfront.

7. Visit the Botanical Garden and Zoo

The Botanical Garden and Zoo offers a relaxing environment.

The Botanical Garden is a cultural haven that should not be missed when visiting Asunción. We enjoyed walking through the lush gardens and seeing the various animals in the zoo. You can also find plenty of vendors selling food and drinks of all kinds. Although it’s a bit far from the city centre, it is still worth a visit.

The Botanical Garden and Zoo provide a green oasis in the city, featuring diverse plant species and a zoo with native wildlife, perfect for nature lovers and families.

8. Explore the Historic Centre

The historic centre offers a glimpse into Asunción’s past.

Walk through the historic centre to see colonial buildings, including the Casa de la Independencia, where Paraguay’s independence was declared.

We booked a free guided tour at Casa de la Independencia that helped us learn about the country’s culture and heritage. Showing us many interesting artifacts, ancient elements, pictures of heroes of independence, and more.

Having served as a residence before being turned into a museum you can also get a glimpse of the former rooms and yard.

The historic centre is rich in colonial architecture and historical landmarks, making it a fascinating area to explore. Many objects from all over the country are preserved and exhibited exquisitely. You can also shop for souvenirs and bags made by locals.

Visiting the historic centre provides a deeper understanding of Paraguay’s past and its journey to independence.

9. Enjoy Local Cuisine at Lido Bar

Try the local dishes at Lido Bar. It was the best food we ate in Asunción.

Dining at Lido Bar, a true local institution since 1953, is a must for anyone looking to experience authentic Paraguayan flavours.

We enjoyed traditional dishes such as chipa guasu (cornbread) and empanadas. The dishes were delicious and the bill was under 10 dollars!

Lido Bar offers a taste of traditional Paraguayan cuisine in a lively and welcoming atmosphere. Make sure to book ahead of time as there could be wait times during busy periods.

10. Visit the Cultural Center of the Republic (El Cabildo)

El Cabildo offers a deep dive into Paraguayan history and culture.

Learn about Paraguayan history, art, and culture through exhibits in this cultural centre housed in the old Congress building. We stopped by here for an hour and found there is so much vitality laced with sadness around the history of Paraguay. Our guide, Ariel, really brought the place to life.

The Cultural Center of the Republic provides a comprehensive overview of Paraguay’s cultural and historical heritage. Make sure to book a guide as English translations for the exhibits are limited.

Visiting El Cabildo is a culturally enriching experience that provides a deeper understanding of Paraguay.

11. Relax in Ñu Guasu Park

Ñu Guasu Park is a great spot for outdoor activities. If you love connecting with nature, I promise you, you’ll love this place.

If you want to liberate yourself from city stress, visit Ñu Guasu Park. It’s gigantic with a little lake and sometimes there are horses around. Make sure to go in comfortable clothes and be prepared to get away from all your problems. We spent the day jogging, picnicking, and enjoying the park’s amenities in this large urban park.

The park offers a wide range of recreational activities in a beautiful natural setting, and is one of the most chill things to do in Asunción.

12. Attend a Football Match

Ñu Guasu Park is perfect for those looking to enjoy the outdoors and engage in various activities. It is also a great space for relaxation.

Attending a football match in Asunción is an unforgettable experience.

Experience the passion of Paraguayan football by watching a match at one of Asunción’s stadiums, like Estadio Defensores del Chaco. It’s one of the most historic stadiums in Paraguay. We attended a match at the stadium and felt the excitement of the crowd. If you go, make sure you complete it with chipa (local bread) and a drink, which you can buy from one of the vendors while seated.

Football is a significant part of Paraguayan culture, and attending a match lets you experience the local passion and energy firsthand.

Watching a football match is a must for sports enthusiasts and those looking to experience local culture. While the match is thrilling, be prepared for the loud and crowded conditions.
