Hernandarias’ Great Way Of The Cross, Becoming A Spiritual Landmark In Paraguay

The Great Way of the Cross in Hernandarias has evolved into one of the most powerful manifestations of popular devotion in Paraguay. It blends religion, culture and community into a single shared experience. In the city of Hernandarias, Alto Paraná department, faith is not only a spiritual expression but also a form of collective identity.

Now, with official recognition as a cultural and heritage event, its significance goes beyond tradition. The celebration reflects the history, unity and values of an entire community, while continuing to grow in scale and impact year after year.

Official recognition strengthens tradition

Through Resolution Nº 26/2026, the Municipal Council of Hernandarias declared the Great Way of the Cross of patrimonial, cultural and district interest. This adds to previous recognitions by local and departmental authorities, reinforcing its importance within the region.

What began in 2012 has steadily transformed into a key event in the religious and cultural calendar. Today, it is widely regarded as one of the most significant religious gatherings in Paraguay. It attracts not only Catholic faithful but also participants from different beliefs who are drawn by its unique atmosphere. The Great Way of the Cross has transcended the Catholic faith. Many people from other religions also come to live the experience, with its special charm that captivates everyone.

Great Way of the Cross: a massive expression of faith and community

The 2026 edition will take place on Friday, 3 April at 18:00. It will start from the Sacred Heart of Jesus church in Área 6. Then, it concludes at the parish Our Lady of the Assumption, all within the city of Hernandarias.

Each year, more than 10,000 people take part in the procession. They come not only from the department of Alto Paraná but also from across the country and the Triple Frontier region. The route recreates the 14 Stations of the Cross, inviting participants to reflect on sacrifice, solidarity and hope.

Candles lighting the night, the figure of Christ carrying the cross, the image of the Virgin of Sorrows and the sound of religious chants create a deeply moving atmosphere. The experience combines spirituality with artistic expression. It turns the city into a living stage of devotion.

Tradition, art and collective effort

The solemnity of the event is reinforced by the participation of “estacioneros”. These are guardians of one of Paraguay’s most authentic forms of popular religiosity. They are joined by penitents who carry crosses as acts of faith, as well as the traditional matraca groups. These groups use the ratchet or clapper, a wooden percussion instrument (idiophone), to produce a dry, strident sound. Traditionally, these groups accompany Holy Week processions.

The visual dimension also plays a key role. The figures used in the representation are carved in wood by Paraguayan artist Elías Orrego. They follow the Franciscan tradition and add artistic depth to the procession.

Behind the scenes, the event is the result of a remarkable collective effort. More than 32 municipal workers have been involved for weeks. They prepare torches and light pathways, with support from schools and parishes that collect recycled plastic bottles for their construction. This “human engineering” reflects the level of organisation and commitment within the community.

Economic and social impact of the Great Way of the Cross

Beyond its spiritual significance, the Great Way of the Cross also generates tangible economic benefits. Local entrepreneurs of Hernandarias and the hospitality sector experience increased activity. High hotel occupancy rates are expected during and for the event.

This combination of faith, culture and economic impact has helped position the Great Way of the Cross as one of the most important religious activities in the country. It contributes to both tourism and local development.

A growing legacy

The culmination of the event takes place in the central square of the parish Our Lady of the Assumption. There, the final stations are represented, including the crucifixion, descent from the cross and burial of Christ. The emotional intensity reaches its peak as attendees approach in silence to venerate the images.

With each edition, the Great Way of the Cross of Hernandarias continues to grow.  This strengthens its role as a living expression of faith and a cultural phenomenon that transcends religious boundaries. In 2026, with institutional recognition and increasing participation, it reaffirms its place not only as a religious tradition, but as a symbol of identity, unity and shared heritage in Paraguay.
