Faster Border Control At Paraguayan Airports With New Screening System

Paraguay has taken a major step towards modernising its airport immigration procedures. As a result, border control processes at Paraguayan airports, particularly Silvio Pettirossi Airport, are undergoing significant improvements. Travellers can now expect a faster and more streamlined immigration experience.

The new API/PNR system enables authorities to access passenger information prior to arrival. This results in fewer delays, and more efficient screening. The system fundamentally changes how border control operates at Paraguayan airports, although it does not alter the steps that passengers are required to follow.

How border control changes impact travellers

For the majority of individuals entering the country, crossing the border will feel smoother and quicker. The process remains straightforward, but airlines now transmit passenger details directly to the authorities before the flight lands. There are no additional forms or procedures required at the airport. All updates occur automatically, behind the scenes.

Low-risk travellers are likely to notice shorter queues at immigration, as officials will have reviewed their data in advance. This accelerates decision-making and reduces waiting times at the border. The aim is to make the arrival experience more efficient and less stressful.

Most passengers will pass through more quickly than before. Only those flagged for further review may be subject to additional questioning. In such cases, authorities may carry out supplementary checks. However, the system is designed to increase efficiency on border control without disrupting the experience of regular travellers. Provided all documentation is in order, entry will be swift.

Aligning with global standards

This update aligns Paraguay with international standards. Specifically, the country has adopted the API/PNR system. To clarify, API refers to Advance Passenger Information, while PNR stands for Passenger Name Record. Similar systems are already in use in other countries to enhance border control, and airport security.

This modernisation helps detect irregular travel patterns and improves control over who enters and leaves the country. It also supports efforts to combat organised crime, human trafficking, and other cross-border threats. The decision to implement the system was the result of an agreement between the National Directorate of Migration and DINAC. The agreement was signed at Silvio Pettirossi Airport and announced publicly late June 2025.

While the system’s official name is technical, the impact is practical: more efficient border control, reduced delays, and a safer experience for all travellers.

These improvements come at a strategic time, as international air connectivity continues to grow. Paraguay is currently experiencing a rapid expansion in international flights, further increasing the need for efficient and secure border control systems.
