Strawberries: Investments In Areguá’s Tradition And Identity

Through the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (MAG), the Government of Paraguay has provided supplies and equipment to farmers in Areguá, aiming to invest in strawberry production. It includes drip irrigation tapes, shade nets, mulching, and motor cultivators. It is a total investment of G. 714,304,500. Recognised for its strawberry production tradition, the city will benefit from this initiative. It aims to strengthen fruit and vegetable farming and enhance its competitiveness.

The beneficiaries belong to the San Miguel Poty Fruit and Vegetable Association and Areguá Fruit and Vegetable Association. Beneficiaries also include Strawberry Growers and Related Producers of Areguá, and the Buenos Vecinos Committee.

The official delivery ceremony occurred at the Buenos Vecinos Committee farm in the Kokué Guasú area. Minister Carlos Giménez highlighted the government’s commitment to supporting farmers.

“Today, the faces of our farmers reflect satisfaction as the government provides them with the necessary tools to improve their production. We are doing great work,” he stated.

Strawberries: The Heart of Areguá

Farmer Juan Carlos Palma emphasised that nearly 70% of the city’s economy depends on strawberry production, which he considers the lifeblood of Areguá. He stressed the importance of government support, noting that the investment will significantly impact the local economy in August and September, as many producers lack the resources to purchase seeds.

The Minister of Agriculture reaffirmed the importance of continuing to support the fruit and vegetable sector, such as strawberry producers, expressing optimism for the future.

“We want to celebrate with you a successful harvest and the good income that will allow us to keep planning ahead,” he stated.

He also recalled previous government support, emphasising that the commitment to Areguá remains strong.

“Last year, we were here, this year we return, and we will always be here to support you because Areguá has an identity that must be preserved. We need sustainable agriculture, and without these tools, we cannot remain competitive,” he stressed.

The MAG reaffirms its commitment to strengthening agricultural production with this continued support. Furthermore, the government is preserving Areguá’s identity as the Paraguayan capital of strawberries. Paraguay is also the producer of many other types of fruits.
